Old Town Extracts from the 1900 Fernandina Directory

Notes

This directory is held at the Reference Desk of the Fernandina Beach Library. I (Michael Harrison) made notes on the entries relevant to Old Town on September 9, 2009, and I am reproducing those extracts below.

Information that is taken directly from the Directory is shown in Bolded Italic script. Any comments I found necessary to make are in regular type face (like this).

ANALYSIS AND COMMENTARY

First, some comments to help understand the data.

·         The street named Somerulos in the Directory is currently spelled Someruelus. Both spellings are incorrect, as the street is named for the Marquis de Someruelos, one time Governor-General of the provinces of Cuba, Florida, and Loiusiana. His office was in Havana.

·         The street named Gate in the Directory is currently known as Towngate Street. The original Spanish name translated is ‘Street of the gate of the City’.

·         The range of street numbers in Old Town for the East-West streets (like White) is 700 – 1200.

·         The range of street numbers in the directory for Old Town for the North-South streets (like Estrada) is 1200N – 1700N. In this rubric, Center Street is the meridian, so houses in the block north of Someruelos are in the 1400 series. In current usage, since the street names (Estrada) are used rather than the number (8th Street) the ‘N’ identifier is redundant and is not used. And because these street names are unique to Old Town, the current practice on numbering is to use (the non-existent) Nassau Street (N 12th) as the meridian or starting point. Thus an address identified in the Directory as 1411 N 10th Street would today be known as 211 Amelia Street. The range is currently 0 – 500.

·         Street numbers today are only loosely tied to location within the block. Thus the address known as 211 Amelia today may or may not be the same location as 1411 N 10th Street.

·         Today, odd-numbered addresses are found on the North side of East-West Streets, and on the east side of North-west streets. I have no reason to believe that the convention was different in 1910.

·         Analysis of the street numbers used in the directory shows that:

Points of note:

  • The standard address format is to give the location on the main EW streets. The exception is for two popular NS streets – Estrada and Amelia.
  • Remember that all media peónias have frontage onto the NS streets, while only the corner media peónias have frontage onto the EW streets.
  • There are four or five lots (providing 8 or 10 address possibilities) on each EW block; there are four lots (8 address possibilities) on each NS block. However, despite the rather haphazard allocation of numbers, the largest number of addresses on a block is in the 800 block of Ladies where there are 4.
